Taos father pleads guilty to attempted child abuse for a drug overdose

TAOS, N.M. (KRQE) – Mateo Dominguez, who is now bound to a wheelchair, was three years old when he ingested an almost deadly amount of Suboxone, a drug used to treat opiate addiction.

It occurred during a three day visit with his father Jerome Dominguez.  According to the Taos News, Dominguez didn’t take the boy to the hospital, until hours later when he was unresponsive. He suffered severe brain damage.

Dominguez is facing between five and a half to 10 years in prison.  He had faced a tougher charge of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.

The boy’s mother asked that the judge reject the plea deal, but the judge decided it was a fair resolution.
