Roswell Police: Shooting of 17-year-old girl was an accident

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – Javier Harvey Salinas, 18, told officers the gun went off while he and the girl were messing around with it.

The police say his statement matches what the victim and two witnesses told investigators.

They are not releasing the name of the girl, but they say she is in stable condition and remains hospitalized.

Salinas is being held on a $20,000 bond. He faces charges including child abuse and negligent use of a firearm.

The gun was reported stolen in 2013. The police are still investigating how the teens got their hands on it. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
