CLOVIS N.M. (KRQE) – A disoriented woman wandered away from her nursing home just over a week ago and staff did not know she was missing. The woman in her 90’s knocked on Matthew Aragon’s door around 6 a.m. last week.
“She kept mumbling and I asked her if she was okay and she said yeah…and I said Donde está tu casa and she said she didn’t know,” said Aragon.
When the woman went to leave, Aragon knew something wasn’t right. Neighbors jumped in to help and called police. On a hunch, Aragon walked across the street to Saint Anthony’s Rehabilitation Center to see if they were missing any residents.
When he asked the nursing home if they were missing any residents they told him they were not. However, when Aragon told them her name, staff rushed outside to get the woman.
Aragon says he is glad that the woman is okay because things could have turned out much worse, especially because the road she crossed to get to his house is usually busy.
“Yeah it’s a pretty busy intersection, they had to bring a wheelchair to wheel her back. She can barely walk,” Aragon said.
Aragon says his mother was recently in a similar facility and if something like this had happened to her, he’d want answers.
“You don’t worry about them because they are in their care,” said Aragon. “Well the thing that worried me is, where is her family? Does her family know that she walked across the street and how long was she out in the cold?”
Saint Anthony’s says the elderly woman managed to wander away from the facility after a gate on the secure unit malfunctioned. The gate has now been fixed.
