Trespassers return to private land to clean litter they left behind

Correction: An earlier version of this story said the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office cited Diana Fraiser for the trash. Frasier was cited by Bernalillo County not the Sheriff’s Office.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Trespassers have turned a woman’s private property into a shooting range and a dumping ground.

They thought it was public land. Now, that they know it’s not, some of them have changed their ways.

Armed with tools and some heavy machinery a handful of volunteers worked to clear Diana Frasier’s private land in Rio Puerco on Saturday.

“Even if this was open space who do they think is responsible for cleaning up their mess?” said property owner Diana Fraiser.

Everything from broken liquor bottles, used mattresses and thousands of rounds of ammo litter the 50-acre area west of Albuquerque.

“Complete and utter disrespect for other people’s property,” said Fraiser.

Fraiser reached out to KRQE News 13 in May to help solve her problem. After the piece ran people started coming forward. They said they had no idea someone owned the land.

Sunday, some of them helped clean it up.

“I was not aware at all and when I saw the arroyo here to the east it’s like a dump. It’s like a garbage dump,” said Gary Blascziek.

“Oh, just a friend helping out,” said Gordon Hamley.

Fraiser said she knows it will take much more to clear all of the junk, but says it’s a welcoming start.

“This is just about goodwill and people letting you know yeah we care about this issue too,” said Fraiser.

The Bernalillo County cited Fraiser for all the trash.

She has 30 days to clean it up.

Crews will be out again Sunday morning.
