Police search for shooter who killed 17-year-old in Albuquerque

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Albuquerque police are looking for the person who shot at a home and ultimately killed an Albuquerque teen late Friday night.

It happened around 10 p.m. in the 1100 block of Nakomis Drive NE near Granite Ave NE.

Police initially received a call about a possible drive-by shooting. Inside a home, they found 17-year-old Jaydon Chavez-Silver had been shot. Chavez-Silver later died from the gunshot.

“How disgraceful this is, a young man killed,” Sgt. Simon Drobik, of the Albuquerque Police Department, said.

Friends said they were with Chavez-Silver in the home, hanging out with a group of about 10 people, when as many as five bullets poured into the house.

On Saturday afternoon, two teens placed flowers outside the window where the fatal bullet entered.

Friends said they don’t believe Chavez-Silver was the intended target and was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Albuquerque police echoed that statement in a news conference Saturday afternoon.

“A possible case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Drobik said. “And some low-life, like I said, shot into the house and [Jaydon Chavez-Silver is] now deceased, in the prime of his life.”

Nextdoor neighbor Dea Renfro was surprised to hear about the shooting.

“I didn’t know it was that house, oh my gosh,” Renfro said, who called her neighborhood “very quiet.”

The family of Chavez-Silver released this statement Saturday:

Jaydon was a great kid and wonderful big brother. He was soon to be a senior at Manzano High School and participated in football and wrestling. Jaydon was loved and will be missed by everyone.

Police said it’s unknown whether or not the shooter was in a car or on foot. A motive is also unknown.

Family members released a picture of the teen Saturday in hopes that someone with information will come forward, and call APD.

This is the second deadly shooting in this area in less than 24 hours. Around 3 a.m. Friday, a man was gunned down in his driveway just a few streets to the east.

However, Albuquerque police do not believe the two incidents are related.
