Teen sentenced in drunk driving case

Vanessa Rodriguez

HATCH, N.M. (KRQE) – A teen girl has been sentenced to a year in juvenile prison for a drunk driving crash that killed two people.

It happened last October near Hatch. Vanessa Rodriguez, who was 16 at the time, had been drinking when she took her parents truck and crashed head on with a car.

The other driver Elida Garcia, 32, died along with Rodriguez’s 17-year-old passenger, Sonia Rodriguez.

Vanessa told investigators her 13-year-old cousin got the beer from Alfredo Alaniz, who sold it from a makeshift store from inside his home. The case against Alaniz is still pending.

The district attorney had asked for the maximum sentence for Rodriguez, two years, but the judge decided on one.
