ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Sponsored by The Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center and led by credential teachers, children’s programs combine nature walks, games, data collection, and adventure.
All the adults helping with Nature Discovery for Kids program are credentialed teachers. They all agree that developing a connection with nature is critical to a child’s development. One statistic stated that among American parents, 82 percent regard time in nature to be very important to their children’s development, second in priority only to reading. Their Nature Discovery teachers make a difference in a young child’s life simply by sharing the child’s nature experiences.
Visits to the Discovery Pond continue to be a highlight of the program for both the children and their teachers. Later, on the dock, each child captures specimens from the pond using his net. Then the children clear their nets in a tub of pond water. Each child then takes a small petri dish and captures “something special”. The petri dish is placed under the microscope so that all make take turns seeing the wonderful tadpole or other aquatic wonder. All creatures are returned to the pond when the children complete their observations.
On Friday nights, the Nature Discovery for Kids program plans activities beginning at 5 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. Each child should bring their own brown bag lunch.
