Widow of Rio Rancho fallen officer gets involved in AG’s new project

Julie Benner

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The widow of former Rio Rancho Police officer Gregg Nigel Benner is extending her hand to the state’s attorney general and his newly-formed violent crimes case review team.

AG Hector Balderas says they’re assembling this group to ensure repeat offenders like Andrew Romero don’t slip through the court’s cracks. He tells KRQE News 13 that they couldn’t do this without Julie Benner.

“Indicating that not only she wanted to be involved but she told me that her husband would have wanted her to be involved to see not only the trial through but making sure New Mexico is a safer place once these reforms are identified,” said Balderas.

Benner will lead the community heroes division. She’ll work with cases similar to hers and help with future reforms.
