New Mexico man dies after raft flips in Durango

DURANGO, Colo. (KRQE) – A Farmington man is dead after his raft flipped at Santa Rita Park in Durango. Durango responders say they quickly conducted CPR on 56-year-old Jose Soto after he was pulled from the animas river by bystanders. Soto was rushed to a regional medical center where he later died.

The river was running well-above average for this time of year. On Sunday six rafters were flipped out of their raft downstream of Smelter rapid. They were able to swim to safety. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
