ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A social media post is giving residents high hopes and creating a big buzz after pitching the idea for a new water park in Albuquerque.
It’s been a decade since Albuquerque residents splashed around at a local water park, after “The Beach” water park closed in 2005.
“Last weekend we went to Santa Rosa where the Blue Hole and the Santa Rosa water park is,” Ron Sanchez told KRQE News 13, “And so we traveled 120 miles just to go have fun in the water.”
But soon, Sanchez and many others may not have to travel that far. That’s the goal of Rocky Mountain Fun Factory and its general manager, Tara McSweeney.
On Wednesday, a post to Rocky Mountain Fun Factory’s Facebook page announced plans to open a water park in two years.
“We have been planning this project for quite some time, we still have a short while to go,” McSweeney said.
For now, she says, investors and management are looking for public input on what the park should offer.
“We want to bring Albuquerque what they missed for so long,” McSweeney said.
On Facebook, the suggestions cam flooding in on the “Inhabitants of Burque” page, which shared Rocky Mountain Fun Factory’s plans. Many expressed excitement at the news. Other people posted pictures of what rides they want to see at the park.
KRQE News 13 asked some locals at the Rio Grande Pool what they wanted to see, “Those big slides,” Ty Garcia said.
“Probably a bunch of slides, stuff for all ages,” Elijah Romero said.
McSweeney said she’s very confident the park will happen, but the city has to give its thumbs up. A meeting with city officials is scheduled for two weeks from now, she said.
She said the water park will most likely be built on the west side of town.
Officials with the city’s planning department say they haven’t seen a serious idea for a water park in the past several years.
