ELEPHANT BUTTE, N.M. (KRQE) – A father and son fishing trip turned into quite a haul for two men at Elephant Butte Lake.

80-year-old Joe Ford of Alamogordo caught this 54 pound striped bass.

Ford told the Alamogordo Daily News that he’s been fishing at the Butte for 25 years and has never seen anything that size.

The state record for a striped bass is 54 pounds, 8 ounces. The record fish was also pulled from Elephant Butte Lake back in 1992.

Ford won’t have a trophy, though – he released the big fish back into the water.
