ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It took nearly a year to complete, but the new Rio Grande High School pool is now open.

The old pool was in such bad shape, it was demolished. The City Council approved $200,000 and Albuquerque Public Schools kicked in another $200,000 for the project. The county and the state had already contributed more than $3 million.

“There’s a new body slide to the pool.  The kids are really enjoying that but it’s also certified for high school competitions with a scoreboard, we have lanes, the starting blocks so this pool is really ready for recreation and competitive events,” said Catherine Lopez of Bernalillo County.

The grand opening is Sunday from noon to five. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
