Valencia County deputy involved in shooting in Los Chavez

LOS LUNAS, N.M (KRQE) – Officials have confirmed a Valencia County sheriff’s deputy was involved in a shooting.

Police say it happened Wednesday afternoon in Los Chavez off Highway 314 near Hazel Road.

Police say the deputy was responding to a welfare check when he came in contact with the suspect and things became physical. This is when the deputy fired at and hit the suspect.

Officials believe the suspect has life-threatening injuries. He was taken to UNM Hospital.

New Mexico State Police are currently investigating. The deputy is on leave while they investigate.
