Police looking for hit and run driver

CLAYTON, N.M. (KRQE) – Clayton police are looking for a hit and run driver who nearly killed a young man in what may have been an intentional act.

20-year-old Ryan Martin was badly injured when he was hit early Sunday morning outside a home where he and some friends were having a party. Witnesses say the driver, now identified as 56-year-old Leland Cruz, passed by, yelled something then turned around and accelerated, running right through a yard into Martin. Police are still looking for Martin.

Martin’s family obviously wants him caught quickly.

“You know, your child is being rushed to the hospital and then it comes out that it really wasn’t an accident and then you know, hard part is wrapping your head around the fact that someone went out of their way to try to kill your child…really hard to grasp and fathom,” a family member said.

Martin is out of the hospital. He was severely bruised, but didn’t suffer any broken bones.
