Rio Rancho prepares for fallen officer’s funeral

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – The funeral for the Rio Rancho officer who was shot and killed during a traffic stop is set for Thursday at the Santa Ana Star Center.

Public visitation for Officer Benner is Wednesday at Daniels Funeral home in Rio Rancho from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the Rio Rancho Police Department is asking people to bring stuffed animals to the services so that officer can carry them in their patrol cars and give them to children in need.

The Rio Rancho mayor is calling for the public to “Stand up for Officer Benner.” He wants the community to show their support for the fallen officer and his family Thursday after the funeral. People are asked to line up along the processional route from the Santa Ana Star Center to Rio Rancho Police headquarters. Someone has left dozens of American flags at Benner’s memorial site that the public can take to the procession.

Following the services, Officer Benner’s body will escorted to the Rio Rancho Police Department for his last call. He will then be taken to the cemetery for a private burial.
