ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is taking another look at its rules for hunting bears and mountain lions.
One issue is whether hunters should be allowed to use snares and traps to capture mountain lions. The department is also considering increasing the number of bear licenses. There is also a new proposal to open up a near area in eastern New Mexico to bear hunting. It’s just south of I-40.
Right now the department is conducting a bear count to determine how many bears there are in the wild.
The department is holding public meetings around to the state to hear what the public thinks.
