Portales-area farmer admits he lied about his organic crops

PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – A Portales-area farmer has admitted he lied when he claimed his crops were organic.

The farmer, Houston Wall, owns about 6,000 acres in Roosevelt County.

According to the Albuquerque Journal, Wall made $300,000 by saying his crops of blue and yellow corn were organic. However, the US Department of Agriculture says farm workers witnessed Wall using pesticides on his crops.

Wall pleaded guilty to misbranding products in interstate commerce, federal misdemeanor. He received five years of probation and will have to pay restitution to buyers who were overcharged.
