Pioneering company lets you rent the chicken before getting the egg

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Egg aficionados can now rent a chicken and keep the eggs for free. That’s the idea behind an Albuquerque company called Renegade Poultry.

For $20 a month you get two egg-laying hens or four teenage hens, and a coop. You can enjoy fresh eggs for as long as you want.

Cameron Helset, the owner, says the hens can lay almost an egg a day, and there are other benefits.

“They’re great for gardening and compost. They’ll eat all the bugs in your yard,” Helset said.

Renegade Poultry will even hand paint each individual coop to appeal to each renter. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
