ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Construction is underway for a garden that doubles as a playground. Saturday was the groundbreaking for the play garden at Isleta near Nashville.

The interactive open space was designed by University of New Mexico students.

Organizers say this will encourage parents and kids to spend time together.

“We feel strongly that in the south valley, in our community, there is a lack of child friendly space,” Adrian Pedroza said. “So we want to provide a model for the county, for the city, how you can incorporate family friendly spaces in our open spaces.”

They say the park includes activities that help kids with math, science and reading. They’re hoping to complete the park as early as Monday.

The rest of the one acre property is where a rec center’s set to be built over the next year and a half. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
