ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A very different version of soccer is coming to town called “KnockerBall.”
The game is already popular overseas. Instead of uniforms, players are in giant inflatable bubbles and crash into each other.
“Knockerball is an inflatable ball that you run into people with,” said John Lahoff.
Lahoff and his partner Orus Guerra are the guys behind bringing the game to Albuquerque.
“Well it’s a really interesting kind of mix between soccer and football,” said Guerra.
Lahoff said it was only two weeks ago when he first saw the game in Arizona. He said in a very short time they found a place, bought the plastic inflatable bubbles, and had a business.
“There’s nothing out here like it,” said Lahoff. “I mean that’s the whole reason I did this, because I was like this looks sweet.”
The objective is to kick the soccer ball in the goal, all while trying to not get knocked down.
“As long as you can get up and get your balance, you’re ready to go,” said Guerra.
While Lahoff and Guerra like to play a more soccer-inspired match, both said the possibilities are endless when it comes to creating games while in the bubble.
“So you can set up bowling balls, you can set up wrestling, I mean you can kind of create your own stuff,” said Guerra.
Many Albuquerque residents said they’re ready to try it out.
“Oh my gosh, that looks super ridiculous,” said Tia Lorentzen. “A little dangerous if there’s anything that pokes on the playing field, but other than that, it looks pretty fun.”
“I would like to get in a ball and hit people down,” said Kyle Adson.
Guerra and Lahoff have partnered with Albuquerque Indoor Soccer and plan to let the public start playing there next week. They also plan to eventually bring games to city parks.
