Construction at dangerous Albuquerque intersection complete

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – After 10 years of waiting, it’s finally happening. A major road that has been a dangerous headache for drivers has been fixed. The road we’re talking about is Irving Boulevard between Unser and Universe.

City officials cut the ribbon on the project Friday. The intersection has caused confusion for drivers since it was built about 10 years ago.

With two lanes blocked off, many drivers weren’t sure which way to turn sometimes driving into oncoming traffic and that resulted in an extraordinary number of crashes.

But this area became a priority for the city this year and after months of construction the project is now complete. Crews added the extra two lanes and a new traffic light was installed at the intersection of Irving and Universe

“I mean it’s always fun to be able to widen roads, complete projects like this, and be able to know that neighbors and westsiders are going to be able to get to work a little quicker, get to schools and parks a little more safely,” City Councilor Dan Lewis said.

The addition of that traffic light did prompt a nearby stop sign to be eliminated and is causing some confusion. There has already been at least one accident since it was removed earlier this week but city officials are confident drivers will figure it out. They say this new design is much safer and allows for more traffic in the area.

The city says the housing boom in that area was much quicker than they anticipated and it took time to get the money they needed to make the changes.
