Local families await news from Nepal

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Some local families are desperate for news from Nepal, following this weekend’s massive earthquake. That’s where they’re from and still have family there.

Ram Thapa is a chef at the Himalayan Kitchen in Durango. He says his family home has been destroyed. His mother, three brothers and six other family members are now forced to stay outside in a single tent and share the little food available.

The owner of the restaurant, Karma Bhotia, was on his yearly trip to Nepal when the quake struck. He’s okay, but is now stranded there. His son says they’re still waiting to hear from other family members.

At least 4,000 people are confirmed dead from the quake, Bhotia says there have also been several strong aftershocks.
