Albuquerque Police arrest shooting suspect

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A man accused of shooting another man managed to make his way onto Kirtland Air Force Base Wednesday morning.

Police say 31-year-old Gary Smith had just shot a man at an off base apartment complex near Gibson and Louisiana. A Kirtland spokesperson says APD was following Smith when they saw him hop a chain link fence lined with barbed wire, right into a base housing complex.

Security forces were able to find him quickly and arrest him.

Smith could face federal trespassing charges.

Kirtland says it will examine its security to see if additional measures need to be taken.

Police say the shooting stemmed from a previous altercation between Smith and the victim.

The victim is hospitalized in stable condition. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
