TAOS, N.M. (KRQE) – Two sheriff’s deputies in Taos County are now holding onto their lifesaving awards. In separate calls last month, deputies Ted Garcia and Mauro Rosales responded to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge where people were ready to take their own life. In both instances, the deputies were able to get people to the local hospital for help by slowing down the situation and talking to them.

Both deputies were recognized by the City of Taos Tuesday. In January the Department of Transportation installed call boxes along the bridge. The call boxes connect to the New Mexico Crisis and Access line. The boxes haven’t been used in an emergency yet.
