SANTA FE (KRQE) – Dave Chappelle’s comedy stop in Santa Fe made national headlines when a Santa Fe man threw a banana peel at the comedian during a show last week. Now we can take you to the scene.

KRQE News 13 has obtained the police video that shows officers interviewing the banana peel-thrower at the theater.

The unusual call had Santa Fe police responding to the Lensic Theater on West San Francisco a week ago Monday night.

“This guy stood up, and just bam, whipped a banana right at him,” said a man who gave an arriving police officer a briefing of the situation.

The target was Dave Chappelle. Christian Englander, 30, admitted to throwing a banana peel at Chappelle.

Englander told KRQE News 13 last week, “I’m a joker.” He wasn’t short of words in his talk with police outside the theater.

“It’s a banana peel. Come on. It wasn’t meant to hurt nobody,” he told officers, as they questioned him. “He said a bad joke at my friend. He picked my friend out of the audience. I had a banana in my pocket. I’m sorry,” said Englander.

Englander explained he felt Chappelle was picking on his friend in the audience. Police tried to explain to Englander that that’s what comedians do.

“Maybe you shouldn’t go to comedy shows anymore dude,” an officer told him.

Englander told News 13 last week that he didn’t know throwing a banana peel at a black man had racial connotations. “I’m not a racist,” Englander said. After police told Englander that Chappelle thought it was a racist attack, Englander tried to turn the tables on the police.

“You see white cops shoot black people, that doesn’t, it’s not, I know there’s hate there,” Englander said. One officer responded, “You are seriously uneducated, bro.”

A police officer provided Englander with his summary. “I think you’re intoxicated. I think you’re being overly sensitive,” he said.

“I’m an artist. When I was f—ing on stage, if someone booed me, I needed to hear it,” Englander told police.

The dash-cam video provided by the Santa Fe Police Department ends with an officer saying, “We need to get this dude out of here. The crowd didn’t appreciate him.”

Two nights later, Englander admitted to throwing another banana peel at a black man at a Santa Fe bar.

He has since apologized to Chappelle for the March 30 incident, but we haven’t heard a public response from the comedian.

Englander is due in court on battery and disorderly conduct charges on May 13. He has pleaded not guilty to both charges.
