Banana peel thrower admits he did it again

SANTA FE (KRQE) – Christian Englander made international headlines for throwing a banana peel at comedian, Dave Chappelle this week in Santa Fe. But, that didn’t stop him from tossing another banana peel at a black man outside a bar just two days later.

Englander sat down for an interview with KRQE News 13 Thursday, and insisted he’s not racist, and that the gesture was a joke.

A banana never seems far from Englander these days. He had one in hand during Thursday’s interview with News 13, but, he said, “I’m a joker, I’m not a hater, I’m not a racist.”

Englander was arrested for throwing a banana peel at comedian Dave Chappelle Monday night during a sketch in Santa Fe. Thursday, he told News 13, he reacted to Chappelle poking fun at his friend in the audience.

“That was my motivation and intentions, hey bad, joke,” he said, equating his banana toss to heckling. “If I had a tomato, I would have thrown the tomato.”

Also on Thursday, Englander told the Santa Fe New Mexican he threw a banana peel at another black man Wednesday night outside of a Santa Fe bar.

According to Englander, the man was upset with the Chappelle incident, so he approached him to explain his side of the story, and a fight broke out.

Englander said the man was choking his friend. “I was like, the the irony of this situation is too much to pass up and I probably should have just let it be,” he told the New Mexican.

After the scuffle, Englander said he ran away and tossed a banana peel at the man, which he coincidentally had in a pocket. That case was not reported to police.

“Somebody, I can’t believe, I can’t believe, not only that someone threw a banana on stage,” Chappelle said after the incident Monday night. “I can’t believe that they had a banana on them this entire time.”

Eglander said he’s taken a lot of heat since the incident with Dave Cappelle.

“People want to murder me, it’s not safe for me to go out,” he told News 13.

He said he didn’t understand how the gesture would be perceived until afterward, when someone explained it to him. Thursday, he apologized to the comedian.

“I am sorry that I hurt your feelings, you know?” Englander addressed Dave Chappelle. “That’s real. Your feelings are real, and I want to acknowledge that, you know?”

He describes himself as a “jester,” and asked that people can see the lighter side of his story. “I just hope that people can understand the light hearted side of the story you know, it was joke,” Englander said.

“If you can’t take a joke, then you shouldn’t be serving them,” he added.

The target of the latest banana peel told the Santa Fe New Mexican about Wednesday night’s scuffle. He and Englander have different versions of who started the altercation.

Englander is charged with battery and disorderly conduct for the incident with Dave Chappelle.

KRQE News 13 reached out to Chappelle’s people to see if Englander’s apology changes anything for him.
