ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It has been 20 years since the West Mesa boys basketball team has played at The Pit in the state tournament. They made it to WisePies Arena AKA the Pit by beating Las Cruces on Saturday night 52-49.
“We knew it was going to be a close game. Our district has been like that all year long. We have had to battle every night in our district, and our guys have fought all year long and battled like that the whole district season,” said Head Coach Shonn Schroer.
They have the whole community behind them as they hope to make it all the way to the championship, but they will first have to go up against the number one team in the state, the Hobbs Eagles. That game will be on Wednesday at 9:45 a.m., but the players have faith in this year’s team.
“They are number one in the state for a reason, so they are going to pack a punch, but I think we are ready. They like to press us, you know, we have a lot of guards like I said. So I think pressing is going to be in our favor right now,” said Mustang point guard Zack Schroer.
