ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Lobo women’s basketball Coach Yvonne Sanchez has won the women’s basketball Coach of the Year honor in the Mountain West. This is her fourth year as head coach, and this year didn’t start out as a winner. The Lobo women started out the year with a 1-7 MW record and finished with a 17-4 record, and also finished second in the conference.
This is the second women’s Coach of the Year award for the UNM basketball program. The last one was 10 years ago under Don Flanagan.
Senior guard Antiesha Brown was named to the All-MW Team, and the All-Defensive Team. The Clovis native is averaging around 15 points per game, and has scored in the double figures in 11 consecutive games. She also has just over 1 thousand points (1,033) in her career at UNM.
“She has been a terrific leader all year long – not just in the last few games – and we are lucky to have her. We are lucky to have her for a little bit left, and she will lead this team to where we want to go,” said Sanchez.
Cherise Beynon also made the All-Freshman team. She has been a welcomed addition to this years Lobo team, as she has been very point productive and able to drive the lane. She had 15 points last week against Wyoming. The Lobos will take on San Diego State in second-round action of the MW tournament. They play on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
