Memorial DWI checkpoint nets 4 arrests

SANTA FE (KRQE) – Santa Fe police arrested four people overnight during a DWI checkpoint in honor of two sisters killed by a repeat drunk driver five years ago.

Deshauna, 17, and Del Lynn Peshlakai, 19, were on Cerrillos road when James Ruiz slammed into them, killing both girls.

Five years ago, Ruiz was out on bond for his fifth DWI arrest. He’s now doing 40 years behind bars.

Police say three were arrested for driving under the influence and one for a revoked license on Friday.
