SANTA FE (KRQE) – A high ranking cop is now charged with defrauding taxpayers.
The case first started a year and a half ago when former Santa Fe Police Chief Ray Rael got word that Wagner was working from home without permission. Wagner claimed it was necessary because his job was to investigate other officers. However, using GPS tracking in Wagner’s car, Rael determined that in just over a month, Wagner left early or was out of the office twenty eight times.
Rael didn’t fire him although Wagner did resign a few months later. This week the DA’s office decided to move forward with four time card fraud charges against Wagner.
Lieutenant Wagner has been on paid leave since August while the DA’s office looked into time card fraud allegations. Now he’s facing criminal charges
KRQE News 13 called Santa Fe police for comment Saturday. They wouldn’t say much other than Wagner will remain on “alternative duty” meaning he won’t have contact with the public. In August, the department told us it hired a private investigator to look into the time card fraud allegations before deciding to rehire Wagner.
