SANTA FE (KRQE) – It probably wasn’t the way she planned on spending Ash Wednesday, behind bars in the place she works. Carolyn Montano works as an accountant at the Santa Fe County Jail, a place full of thieves. Now she’s accused of stealing from them.

This is a case of the missing money. In this case, the inmates’ money.

When they are booked into jail, their cash is collected and sent to the bank.

A few weeks ago, Montano was supposed to hand a bag with $3,700 in it to an armored car driver. The county noticed the money never made it to the bank.

Deputies interviewed Montano and she denied knowing anything about it. She may have gotten nervous since then.

This week, someone put the money in a night deposit box at the bank. Bank video showed a car belonging to Montano’s cousin making the drop off.

Deputies talked to her again and she claimed the money bag turned up in her desk drawer.

“When detectives started questioning her about it, she ultimately said, ‘look, let me tell you what happened…’ and her story didn’t add up.” Juan Rios with the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said.

Montano is charged with felony embezzlement. She will need $2,500 to get out of jail, or in this case, her place of employment.

Deputies said it took her cousin three different trips to the bank to fit the money in the night deposit box. She eventually used a manila envelope to make it work. She won’t be charged because she thought she was just doing her cousin a favor.
