ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – UNM athletics added the sport of sand volleyball in September. The sport is very new to the NCAA and was deemed a championship sport in October 2014. Head coach of indoor volleyball, Jeff Nelson, will take over the helm of this team for the upcoming season.
Nelson will be assisted by another indoor coach, Lisa Beauchene, and this will be their first year ever coaching sand volleyball. Coach Nelson said that having a sand volleyball program at UNM will be beneficial for bringing in new talent.
“They (recruits) were saying, well, if you don’t have sand then we aren’t interested. So, you know it really became something for us that we needed to go this direction,” said Nelson.
There will be a lot of girls playing both indoor and sand volleyball this year and they seem excited about this new opportunity. “It’s definitely refreshing. We work long hours in indoor, so it’s a really nice change of pace. I think that we are all going to benefit from it and be really refreshed for when indoor season comes,” said sophomore Julia Warren.
The sand volleyball team’s first game will be in March. It will be 3/8 against LSU in Phoenix, Ariz.
