Angel Fire, N. M. (KRQE) – Thrill seekers came to Angel Fire Resort to shred on the mountains, but instead of boards and skis, they were sliding on shovels.

The 39th Annual Angel Fire Shovel Race Championships were held Saturday and Sunday.

Competitors flew down the mountain sitting inside the scoop of the shovels, bracing themselves for gravity to do the rest. It’s not for the faint of heart with speeds surpassing 60 miles per hour.

The event keeps growing every year with participants and spectators coming from all over the country to see the sport. Overall, 86 people competed this year.

“Shovel racing began as a simple contest here in the 1970s when our lift operators would ride their shovels down the mountain at the end of their shifts. We are now celebrating our 39th year of this competition,” explains Dan Swanson, director of marketing at Angel Fire Resort. “It has since grown into a crazy competition on the mountain that includes speed suits, costumes and radar guns. No year is ever the same, as competitors always try and out do each other every season.”

This year’s winners:
Women in Media Category: KRQE News 13 Gabrielle Burkhart from Albuquerque, who clocked 59 mph and finished in 16.7 seconds
Men’s Category: Jeff Hamblin, who clocked over 65 mph and did the course in 15.3 seconds.
Female Category: Kelly Haukebo, clocked just over 60 mph and finished in 16.6 seconds.
Little Scoop (ages 6 -9): Ellison Hensley, who clocked 39.4 mph and finished in 16.3 seconds.
