ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Albuquerque Academy grad, James Borrego, was named interim head coach of the Orlando Magic on Thursday after the team fired Jacque Vaughn.

Borrego is in his third season with the Magic. He spent two previous seasons as an assistant with New Orleans. Prior to that, Borrego spent seven seasons with the San Antonio Spurs.

He played college basketball for the University of San Diego. While a player at Albuquerque Academy, Borrego won a pair of state championships.

Borrego has 30 games left to prove to Magic brass that he deserves to be the permanent solution as head coach. The Magic will reportedly take a look at coaching candidates during NBA All Star weekend.

There is speculation that former Magic player and NBA coach Scott Skiles will be considered.
