ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It’s set to be a good time for a good cause and all in one night. Up-and-coming indie rock/bluegrass group The Avett Brothers are coming to the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho for a concert on Wednesday night. Audiences will not only be enjoying good music, but doing a good thing because part of the money raised from ticket sales will benefit all the Goodwill locations in the state.
“This is our main financial fundraiser for the year,” says Melissa Perez, community relations coordinator for Goodwill Industries of New Mexico. “Goodwill really focuses on item donation so we’re the place where everyone will bring their gently used items, but they don’t often think about us for financial donations, but those financial donations are key to fund our programs and services just like our thrift stores are and this benefit concert allows us to serve thousands of New Mexicans every year.”
Organizers say there could not be a better way to make the big fundraiser count and be fun at the same time than with the music of The Avett Brothers.
“You know, the Avett Brothers have been fantastic,” adds Perez. “They’re a band that started with two brothers, Seth and Scott and they’ve expanded from there, so they really take pride in helping out local communities. So they really look at Goodwill and all that we do and they said yeah, absolutely we want to do a concert with those guys.”
In performing at this larger venue, it’s not only a win for fans, but a critical win for Goodwill by hopefully raising that much more in funds.
“So really what we focus on and what a lot of people don’t realize is that we are more than just a thrift store,” says Perez. “We’re more than just a place for you to drop off your gently-used donations and a place for you to get great bargains in our stores. We take the revenue that we generate in those stores and we put it towards programs that will help people find jobs in the community.”
