Driver flees scene after hitting 10-year-old

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Police say a driver fled the scene after hitting a 10-year-old pedestrian. It happened in the 1300 block of Broadway Boulevard SE. Police say the victim was hit by a blue four-door sedan. The boy was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. The driver has not been located.

Police warn residents of increase in phone schemes

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – Roswell police are warning residents of a recent rise in phone schemes. Among the more frequently heard scheme is a caller claiming to be from the IRS and they say the person is very aggressive when demanding money. Another scheme is someone pretending to be the grandchild of the person and needs money. Police want to remind you never give out your financial information or other personal information unless you are 100 percent sure who the other person is on the other line.

Police arrest 3rd suspect in copper wire theft

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Police have arrested a third suspect wanted for stealing nearly $33,000 worth of copper wiring from an Albuquerque movie set. Robert Gallardo was taken into custody on Monday. Back in December, police say Gallardo, Valentin Garcia and Josephine Duran stole the copper while the movie “The Scorch Trials” was shooting at Winrock Mall. Garcia and Duran were busted after a security guard spotted a car at a truck stop with hundreds of pounds of copper wire inside. Police are still looking for a fourth suspect.

Isotopes to fill hundreds of spots at job fair

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The Albuquerque Isotopes will host a job fair this weekend and they are looking to fill hundreds of positions for the upcoming baseball season. Officials say the job fair typically brings in about 1,000 applicants. The job fair is this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Isotopes Park. For more information and an application »

Bill to ban drones for hunting on its way

SANTA FE (KRQE) – A committee has approved a bill that would ban the use of drones for hunting. The state Game Commission has already voted to make it illegal to use drones to signal an animal’s location, to harass a game animal, or to hunt a protected species seen by a drone within 48 hours. The proposed bill would now make it illegal under state law.

Newest ABQ Ross now hiring

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – It appears the Ross Department store that has been advertised for months and months on Eubank is finally going to open. The store has had a coming soon sign in the old Office Depot location next to Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club since last March but hiring for the location is now underway. There are four other Ross locations in the city but this is the first close to the southeast part of town. It’s scheduled to open next month.

Jealousy sparks Artesia shooting

ARTESIA, N.M. (KRQE) – An Artesia man has been arrested for allegedly shooting another man because he was jealous. Police say they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds on his couch on the 1200 block of West Missouri. As the victim was being treated by paramedics, 23-year-old Ruben Lopez handed his weapon to a deputy and confessed to the crime. He told police he saw his ex-girlfriend and the man inside together, and that’s when he shot at the floor, then the man. Lopez was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery with a firearm.

$100K in drugs seized in Gallup

GALLUP, N.M. (KRQE) – A major drug ring has been busted in Gallup. Twenty-seven people have either been charged or arrested. Authorities say the group was selling drugs such as meth, heroin and marijuana. The drugs seized have an estimated street value of $100,000.

World’s Strongest Viking goes to ‘Game of Thrones’ Mountain

SANTA FE (KRQE) – The man known as Mountain from George R.R. Martin’s “Game of Thrones” is living up to his nickname. He won the world’s strongest Viking competition for the second time in the row, but this time he broke a 1,000-year record. He carried a 30-foot, 1,400-pound log five steps. According to an Icelandic Legend, the original record-holder carried the same log, but only took three steps. Next on his list?
