ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – While playing basketball as a little girl and in high school at St. Michael’s, Alexa Chavez always thought she would play in The Pit one day.
“My grandpa, it was always his dream for me to play here and I just think about that and how proud I am making him,” said Chavez.
She is a junior forward on the University of New Mexico women’s basketball team. Chavez walked on two seasons ago and has since earned a full scholarship.
“I just go out and play and try to give it 110 percent all of the time,” said Chavez. “I try not to think about too many things because I think I would make too many mistakes.”
Lobos coach Yvonne Sanchez feels fortunate that Chavez sought them out coming out of high school.
“We are very, very fortunate that she came in and wanted to be a part of this program because without her right now, I am not sure that we have the same success,” said Sanchez.
Chavez is averaging six points and nearly six rebounds per game. She had her first start ever as a Lobo last season, scoring 11 points. Chavez and the Lobos will be in action at WisePies Arena AKA The Pit Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Lobos are playing the Air Force Falcons.
