Popular video touches on misconceptions of NM

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The way people outside New Mexico talk, sometimes you wonder if they could even find it on a map.

“I have heard and I see that people think that New Mexico’s not a state,” said Azur Leyba. “They think it’s part of Mexico, and I think that’s hilarious because I don’t even know Spanish.”

“We were staying at motel one time in Connecticut,” said Diane Viens. “We were there for a wedding and the woman kept saying, ‘Well, you can’t pay in pesos,’ and I said, ‘But I live in New Mexico.’”

“I have had people ask me, ‘Do you speak English? How long have you been in the country? Did you get a passport to get here,’” said Jason Conner.

Stories like that inspired locals to create a video and share it online last week.

It focuses on things New Mexicans get when it comes to non-New Mexicans.

The video is blowing up on Facebook.

It’s been watched more than 95,000 times and shared more than 2,700 times.

“It is been awesome,” said Keagan Karnes. “Kind of unprecedented, so now that’s our goal for every video.”

Karnes is with NewMexi.co, a new, local company behind this video and more than a dozen others meant to showcase the charm of New Mexico and set the record straight for those non-New Mexicans.

“We want to put out the best of New Mexico to the world and the Internet has made it possible,” Karnes said.

Especially with the success of the latest video, more are on the way.
