Officers won’t be charged in Santa Fe shooting

Santa Fe Police

SANTA FE (KRQE) – Two Santa Fe officers involved in a shooting ruled unjustified will not be charged. In 2013, Officer Stephen Fonte and Officer John DeBaca spotted a stolen SUV and blocked it in.

Roberto Mendez-Ortega refused to get out. Instead he put the car in reverse, hit a patrol car and then headed toward the officers. Officer Fonte shot at the tires and Officer Debaca shot into the SUV shooting Mendez’ face. A 4-year old boy was also inside the vehicle.

Last year a grand jury ruled the shooting unjustified. It was sent to Roswell’s District Attorney for review, and she found the officers did what any reasonable person would.
