Walmart shooting victim ID’ed, shooter on the loose

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – According to Albuquerque police, the man who was shot at a Walmart at I-40 and Coors has died and the shooter is still on the run.

It happened around 9 p.m. Sunday when police got a call about a fight. As officers were heading to the scene, they said 21-year-old Angelo Martinez was shot and the shooter ran off. Police said Martinez died after being taken to UNM Hospital.

Walmart’s corporate officials said Monday that the shooting took place in the parking lot. They said witnesses saw two men fighting and called 911 before the shots. Police said there were people in and around the store when it all happened and Walmart officials said Martinez was found just outside the store near the bikes.

Some witnesses said they didn’t know what was going on until they tried to leave and were told they had to wait inside.

“The lady told us that we were on lockdown and then we just kind of found out more and more,” said Roxanne Lester.

Customer Jannelle Cote said, “Just as we were getting out, they said someone got shot and so I was really confused.”

Four sections of the parking lot were blocked off, according to shopper Raven Senti.

The store closed for several hours while police investigated, but it’s open Monday.

Martinez was in the news a few years ago when he went on the run after holding up a smoke shop in the South Valley. He had been in and out of jail the past few years for everything from drugs to aggravated assault.

Police haven’t given a motive for last night’s shooting, but they did release some pictures Monday night to try to track down the killer. They want to find a red pickup truck. Police also put out surveillance pics from the parking lot.

Shootings at popular stores make people extra nervous, but this isn’t scaring shoppers away. People KRQE News 13 spoke to said this can happen anywhere after dark in Albuquerque

“If Walmart being such a family-safe place, someone can get shot in a parking lot, I’m sure other places carry just as a high of a risk,” Ashlee Custy said.

APD is not saying much about this murder investigation.

Witnesses said the two men were fighting before the shooting.

There were a lot of people around when it happened, but no one could give a good description of the shooter.
