APD: Suspect who shot at officers gunned down

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A crazy week and a half for Albuquerque police shows no signs of slowing down. Two officers were shot, two officers were charged with murder and Tuesday police shot and killed a suspect who they say fired at their officers.

It happened a little before 5 p.m. when APD was called to check in on two suspicious persons. An officer found them near Constitution and Quincy. One fled and the officer was able to arrest the other one and put him in his squad car.

The officer looked for the other suspect and found him nearby. That’s when APD says he pulled a gun and fired at the officer at least twice before running again, this time East on Constitution. APD says that officer did not fire back.

Police caught up with that second suspect near San Mateo and Constitution and they see he fired at least twice again at officers. That’s when at least two officers did fire back, killing him.

One witness described what he saw to KRQE News 13.

“All of a sudden at least a good 8 gunshots. I went to the front of my house I looked out and I see them flipping a man over putting handcuffs on him,” Steven Rogers said.

That man was wearing a bulletproof vest, according to APD. No officers were seriously hurt during the incident.

APD says the incident was captured on lapel camera video and that at least two officers are on standard paid leave at this point.

The first suspect detained was transported to the hospital. APD spokesperson Tanner Tixier said that was precautionary and because he was complaining of dizziness.

San Mateo remains closed both ways near Constitution while this investigation continues.
