Police warn about warm-up car thefts

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Car thieves are especially busy now that the temperatures have dropped below freezing.

That’s because many people have been leaving their cars running in their driveways to warm up.

Police said that in November, 21 vehicles were stolen that way in the Albuquerque metro area. In December, it was 36 cars and trucks. That’s compared to just seven warm-up thefts in October.

APD said in most cases, the insurance companies won’t cover these types of car thefts.
