Voters to decide on new NM town

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Voters will decide Tuesday if they want to create a new town in north western New Mexico.

The Kirtland area, just west of Farmington, is currently managed by San Juan County.

If approved, a mayor and board of trustees could be elected in March and the town could start operating in July.

“Art Day” comes back to ABQ Museum

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A popular preschool art series is making its way back to the city.

Jan 14 will be the first “Art Day” of the year at the Albuquerque Museum. The purpose of the tour is to introduce preschoolers to art at an early age.

They’ll be learning about carvings and sculptures.

“Art Day” takes place on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month between Jan and April, from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Carlsbad freeze damage worse than originally thought

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – The weather damage to the water supply line to the Carlsbad Caverns is much worse than first thought.

Park officials said at first, it appeared only one section was damaged from the recent freezing temperatures. However, the water inside the metal pipes froze solid.

As the lines began thawing, they broke apart, wiping out the entire 6,900 foot pipeline.

The park is open and officials are working on a temporary solution. They had approved a plan to bury the pipes in the future but that project will take some time to complete.

18-year-old shooting victim ID’ed

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A man is dead after a shooting at a NE ABQ apartment complex early Monday morning.

He has been identified as 18-year-old Dayton Campbell.

The victim had been taken to University of New Mexico Hospital just before 2 a.m. but he was already dead.

Police said the victim had been shot at the Mission Hills Apartment Complex on Menaul. Police are investigating this as a suspicious death and no suspects have been arrested.

Manhunt underway for gunmen in westside shooting

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – APD is looking for as many as three suspects after a shooting in a northwest ABQ neighborhood.

It happened Sunday night near Paseo del Norte and Golf Course Road.

Police said a 19-year-old-man is in critical condition after being shot. Police haven’t released his name yet or any other details. Detectives are interviewing several witnesses.

Gas leak closes part of 2nd Street

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Crews are repairing a gas leak that forced the evacuation a downtown business Monday.

No injuries have been reported.

Second Street closed between Lead and Coal while the NM Gas Company is on scene repairing the leak.

MMA fighter cleared in home invasion death to enter ring

LAS CRUCES (KRQE) – A Mixed Martial Arts fighter who killed man, who broke into his home, is lacing up his boxing gloves for the first time since it happened.

Dona Ana County deputies say four men broke into a mobile home near Las Cruces where MMA professional Joe Torrez and his fiancée lived with their toddler.

Torrez fought the intruders off, fatally stabbing one of them.

After being cleared of any wrong-doing, he’s now re-entering the ring. He will go against his opponent in a Las Cruces cage fight at the end of the month.
