ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – One of Albuquerque’s “worst of the worst” offenders will spend two decades in federal prison for his role in a string of armed robberies and a home invasion.

Between 2012 and 2013, 21-year-old Joel Meeks pulled a gun on an employee at an Albuquerque smoke shop, demanding cash. He held up a convenience store and fired a shot before he left.

And a month later, he hog-tied a home invasion victim and left him to drown in a bathtub, fortunately the man survived.

Thursday a judge sentenced Meeks to 20 years.

His co-defendant in the crimes, Raul Ortega, was sentenced in august to 18 years behind bars. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
