Recent AFD grads add manpower to the department

Albuquerque Fire Department

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – New firefighter graduates are adding manpower to the Albuquerque Fire Department. Twenty-eight cadets graduated Friday from the fire academy, growing the department to 670 men and women.

AFD has been struggling recently to fill its ranks, when employees call in or take vacation. On one weekend five engines were down one body each. The department has had to enact it’s mandatory overtime policy.

The chief says the added firefighters are a step in the right direction. The department is still working toward increasing its ranks of paramedics, which require more medical training. Some of the new cadets may choose to follow that path.
