Santa Fe police investigate officer-involved shooting


SANTA FE (KRQE) – A suspect is in the hospital after being shot by police in a busy part of Santa Fe. It started Friday morning as officers were trying to serve a warrant on the 100 block of Juan De Dios with the Department of Corrections.

The suspect, 23-year-old Kevin Chavez, was wanted for a probation violation.

Police said as they were trying to get Chavez into custody shots were fired and the he took off in a vehicle. Officers chased him several miles to the intersection of Cerrillos and Cordova.

That is where Chavez was taken into custody with at least one gunshot wound, but is expected to survive.

State police are now helping with the investigation.

“All three agencies are working very closely together, they are making sure a very thorough investigation is being done the community is not at any risk at this point, we will continue to work together,” SFPD spokeswoman, Celina Espinoza said.

An officer suffered a minor injury during the incident.
