High school teams battle it out for state titles

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – Mayfield has been there and done that. They have eight championship trophies for big school football on their resume. But Rio Rancho is a first timer in the championship game and they are looking to close out the season with a title and perfect record.

Top seed Rio Rancho hosted the Mayfield Trojans for the six-A state championships. Rio Rancho took the trophy by defeating the Trojans in a close game 33 to 31. Rio Rancho also finished with a perfect 13-0 season.

Belen fell three points shy while trying to win a state title back in 2009. The Eagles got another shot facing off with the Artesia Bulldogs football program that has 27 championship banners hanging at home. Artesia won a 28th title with a 49 to 21 victory.
