ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Local artist Laura Wacha was just recently named “Best Visual Artist in the City” in this year’s issue of Albuquerque the Magazine’s “Best of the City.” The issue was just released on Nov. 26.
Wacha focuses on acrylics with her paintings and paper mache sculptures. She says her work is narrative in nature, and her focus is to create a visual itch that lingers in the mind like an unanswered question. On each canvas, she says, she’ll paint images both familiar and fantastic, giving equal importance to topics domestically mundane and globally tragic or vice versa (she does have a big political twist in a lot of her work). Tucked between cartoon-like creatures and patterned backdrops are brightly colored dollops of intrigue and ambiguity that serve as an invitation for the viewer to fill in any perceived narrative blanks.
