COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRQE) – A man on the state’s most wanted list who is accused of murdering a teen couple, has been caught. Ricardo ‘Ricky’ Martinez, 20, was found more than 300 miles from the crime scene.
A Crime Stoppers tip led investigators to a Colorado Springs apartment building where Ricky Martinez was hiding out. U.S. Marshal’s, Santa Fe County deputies and Colorado Springs police swarmed the building early Saturday morning and got their guy.
Police say Martinez killed an 18-year-old and his 13-year-old girlfriend. He was added to the state’s most wanted list Friday. His arrest comes three weeks after the couple Venancio Cisneros and Anamarie Ojeda were found shot to death in a car just outside of Santa Fe near Highway 599 and Interstate 25.
One witness told the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office they saw Martinez in the car with the two before the murders. Others were able to point out his tattoos to investigators.
Martinez, who is from Santa Fe, was considered armed and dangerous while on the run. Deputies say he now faces two open counts of murder. It’s not clear what the motive behind the murders was.
“The violent nature of it was the main reason that we had him on the most wanted [list] and it was very important for us to get him off the streets,” said Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office Major Ken Johnson.
Melicendro Martinez, Ricardo’s uncle, was also arrested at that apartment Saturday. He was wanted for absconding from probation. Both men will be extradited back to New Mexico. That should take about two weeks.
