ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The two suspects in the murder of a man, whose body was found on the Sandia Crest Road in October, are behind bars Friday. One was caught in northern New Mexico and the other in Texas.
Danny Trujillo was taken into custody Thursday in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The other suspect, Ignacio Gallegos, was found in Lubbock, Texas Friday morning. Both were a long way from the East Mountains where 26-year-old Eloi Leyba’s body was found in October.
According to court documents, the 26-year-old was shot several times in the back. His body was found on crest road on October 10th.
Investigators with the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department believe Trujillo and 25-year-old Ignacio Gallegos were with Leyba the night he was killed, along with Leyba’s ex-girlfriend. She is now dating Gallegos.
The woman claims allegations surfaced that Leyba may have sexually assaulted one of her daughters and was trying to get back with her.
Detectives finally found Trujillo in Las Vegas Thursday.
“Detectives worked with U.S. Marshals service, basically following up on leads and information through interviews they were able to track them to the Las Vegas area, they worked with local law enforcement up there, and were able to take him into custody yesterday,” Sgt. Aaron Williamson said.
The sheriff’s department said Gallegos was caught in Lubbock earlier Friday.
Both men face charges of murder and conspiracy in Leyba’s death. No word if they’ll face additional charges.
Trujillo should be extradited to Bernalillo County in the next few weeks. No word yet on when Gallegos will be extradited.
